May 16th started early - I was scheduled to be induced at 7am and was suppose to call the hospital at 6 to make sure they had a bed. I was surprised I slept at all that night. My alarm went off at 430 and I made sure I had everything I needed for the hospital, and everything the kids needed for a sleepover at Mike's parents.
I shaved my legs. Because that's important. I mean how many people were going to be close enough to notice if I hadn't... And yes, it was on my morning to do list.
I called the hospital at 6 and was told to come on up - at that point we woke the kids up, and wouldn't you know it - it got crazy from there. Max had an accident in his bed, he hasn't in over a year - so instead of just bringing the kids in jammies - we rushed to bathe Max, start laundry, clean the mattress, get everything in the car and get the kids to Grandma's and get to the hospital, in about 40 minutes. We made it - barely.
On the way to Mike's parents Grace was still not wanting the baby, still making rude comments, still wishing he wasn't coming to our family. Not the greatest send off. Max was more than excited - and I could only hope and pray Grace would come around.
We got checked in and they had Mike wait in the waiting room while they took me back, had me change and started getting me hooked up to monitors and then asked if Mike beat me. Don't you love the questions they "have" to ask without your spouse being there? For those of you who don't know, it's a series of questions about abuse, drugs and alcohol.
After that they brought Mike in, my doctor came in and broke my water, informed me that I was still only at a 1 (this after being told I was almost at a 2, three weeks ago) and to let them know when I wanted my epidural. Which I WANTED. Truthfully, with Max they broke my water and gave me an epidural all in about 5 minutes, I didn't feel anything with Max and that was how I wanted it with Bennett. But - I had to wait, at least for a while.
They started me on platocin and my contractions began almost immediately. Within an hour I was ready for the epidural, I don't like pain. I was born in a day of age of medicine for good reason! Bring on the drugs. The nurses told me I could have the epidural then, or wait until after a c-section, was that even a question? I got the epidural, it worked great, and quickly. The nurses checked me at that point and I was still at a 1. An hour later I was at a 5. And I was pleased! Grace's labor was 26 hours, Max's was less than 6 hours, I was hoping for a little faster than Max's. But right after I was told I was at a 5 our baby's heart rate dropped, they had to turn off the platocin and put me on oxygen. They told me he rebounded after the contractions good, so they didn't think I needed a c-section, but during contractions it dropped too low and they needed to stabilize him before they could turn the drugs on again.
After about an hour baby's heart looked good and they turned back on the juice. An hour past, I was at a 5. Another hour past and I was at a 5. This happened for several hours. 6 hours came and went, and I wasn't even close. 8 hours came and I was still at a 5. At 9 1/2 hours I felt a lot of pressure, but I was hesitant to call the nurse. If she checked me and I was only at a 5 I was going to cry. After 10 minutes of debating I pushed the call button and she Sherrie my nurse came in - she checked me and got a smile - she said 10! You are ready to push! I don't know what happened to 6, 7, 8, or 9 - but who cares?
I started pushing, and I pushed and I pushed and pushed. To make a long story short, this continued on for over two hours. At which point she called my doctor - when she showed up she asked what I'd been doing all day. She said she'd delivered 4 other babies that day, I was the first one to get started and the last one to deliver. Truthfully I really liked her, she is sarcastic, and tells it like it is. Which works great for me, other people may have a really hard time with her - but it didn't bother me at all.
When she checked me she said "Oh, that's not good, those are eyeballs. You're baby has turned face up and he's past the point of turning him - you are just going to have to push." The fact he turned didn't surprise me, most babies stay head down, but every appointment he was a different direction, he was a wiggle worm to the very end. We know he was in correct position when we started 12 hours earlier - at some point during the day he did a little dance and decided to make it hard on his mama.
Sparing the details I will just say that they said when a baby is born face down they hunch their shoulders and curl up into the smallest form possible to come out. When a baby is born face up they don't curl up, they dont' turn their shoulders in and thus it's a whole lot less fun. When he came out all I could think was thank goodness! He had some major bruising on his head, and a giant goose egg, but he was here, and he was perfect.
When we called to tell the kids their brother was here, Grace squealed the loudest, she couldn't wait to come hold him and was smitten with him. Don't ask her, because most of the time she still says she doesn't love him, but her actions and face speak louder than words.
Max just loves him from the second he learned he was going to be a big brother.
None of the pictures do the bruising on his head justice, but I love how awake he is in these. They were taken the first night, after Mike headed for home. I kept him until they took him for his bath - and then let him go to the nursery for a few hours. I was beat.
My parents and little brothers came down the next day to meet him-
And the next morning we headed home.
Bennett Ryan Tyler was born May 16th at 6:36pm, he weighed 6lbs 15oz and was 20 inches long. It took a very long time to decide on his first name, but his middle name was decided months ago, he is named after my older brother Ryan, who is one of the most hard working, honest, caring people I know.
We are excited for this next phase of family life- the one where the kids out number the parents, the one where we return to interrupted nights, poopy diapers, and lots of laundry. We are blessed beyond words!

Out of the mouth of babes
A couple funnies from the last few days - I need to do better at writing these down - Some of them I put on FB, but it's not the best tool to refer back to.
Last night Grace wanted to write a note- she asks me how to spell words, by the 2nd word she said "I'm just going to write the first letter, it's way easier that way." So true!
The other night I was making chicken enchiladas, I was taking dinner into a family in our ward and making enough for us also. The recipe I have you boil the chicken with onion, salt and pepper and green chillies and then you drain the chicken and let it cool. As I was putting it into the strainer Max peeked over the sink and said "Rocks!? You are making rocks for dinner!?!" I was on the phone with my mom and she got a nice laugh out of it.
The other day in the bathtub Max said we should name our baby Guido - throughout the pregnancy he's suggested Luke Skywalker, Thor, and He-man, but Guido? Where did he come up with that?
Grace told us about a week ago that she wasn't going to Kindergarten because she's crossed it off her list of things to do. In fact, the only thing on her list is to play with her dog and her toys and watch TV.
We took our dog into get fixed and when we were leaving the vet's Grace told Diva to go to the car, which she did. She told her to get in the car and then to sit. Diva did both and Grace looked at me and said "That surgery really helped her hearing!"
For Max's birthday he got baseball stuff, a T-ball stand, bat, ball and glove. He's not very coordinated so we're hoping by the end of the summer we can get him some mad skills! The first night we were on our front lawn and he couldn't hit the ball of the stand to save his life, we switched to catching, and as long as I stood there helping him with the glove he could catch, but as soon as I moved he would drop the ball. After 4 or 5 times he threw the mitt down and said "I'm a loser!" That is never something I'd say to him, and I had the hardest time not laughing because he was so dramatic!
Kids are mimics. And mommy and daddy have tried really hard to not swear. But there is one word. Just one. One really isn't that bad right? Except when you hear it out of your four year old's mouth. Anytime he's angry. "Why is the damn fridge open?" "I hit my d*&! arm on the wall!" "I stepped on your d.... toy!" "The d.. dog won't stop bugging me!" Oops. It's really an eye opener - and sometimes it's about the dumbest things, and then I can hear when I said it about something stupid too. He's learned from the master!
Max has a crush on one of my friends from church. One of my grown-up friends, with kids of her own. Randomly he'll say things like "I love Jamie's hair, it's curly." The other day I called to see how she was doing and Max hopped off the bed and said "Was that my Jamie?" He's pretty funny about it - but oh so young.
I always think I'll remember the funny and cute things they say, but that's all I can think of for now.

Sad and Thankful
I've never been more thankful that my baby is a wiggle worm as I am today.
My heart is full and hurting for a friend, we've known each other since 6th grade. We were due the same day, May 16th and both having boys. On Monday she went into the doctor and they couldn't find a heart beat. They did a c-section that afternoon. Her husband travels several weeks out of the month and her parents are on a mission right now - I'm praying her husband was there with her when she found out but I'm just not sure.
I can't imagine what she must be feeling right now. I haven't seen her since our high school graduation, but the past few months we've shared something that was fun and special. I'm not sure if I'm so emotional because I'm so close and I think that is every pregnant women's greatest fear or what, but I can't stop thinking about her.
Ever since I found out last night this little dude has been especially wiggly, every time I need the reassurance that he's okay I get a nice kick - such a simple tender mercy.
I pray that her family can find peace and comfort.

Cassie's Wedding
My little sister got married the end of April - here are some pictures from the temple, which was the only location my camera showed up that day. Good thing there were many going around!
Notice Grace started with a a hair bow-
The flowers were beautiful - notice Max's green shoes. I swear I don't know what to do with this kid and shoes, it is so hard to find matching shoes, almost daily. I searched and searched and searched, and for the life of me I can't find his church shoes. So, he stands out, just a little.
Cassie and Josh coming out of the temple - all smiles!
The nieces and nephews congratulating the newlyweds-
And Nayvie was so funny when they kissed.
Max's whole goal was to ruin pretty much every picture all day long. Notice he's checking that everyone else is looking at the camera.
Mike and me- It was such a bright, beautiful, breezy, chilly day.
I love this one of Mike holding Grace's hand.
My mom and brothers, Jordan, Patrick and Ryan-
My dad keeping Grace and Nicole warm.
And the beautiful bride! Congratulations Cassie and Josh! We love you and wish you the very happiest life!
